Protect yourself

Contraceptives not only offer protection against unwanted pregnancies, but can also protect against sexually transmitted diseases, for example by using a condom. Alongside the condom, the birth control pill is one of the most popular contraceptives in Germany, which is why I decided to compare these two contraceptives directly in order to identify differences or even similarities based on certain data. The aim was to visualise this data in an understandable and meaningful way using different colours and shapes in innovative graphics and representations.

Static poster

The concept is based on data from "Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung" in the years 2011 and 2018, in which I compared the condom and the birth control pill in the following three categories, each represented by strands in different shades of grey:

  1. Application problems during usage in % (number of people affected)
  2. Usage by age group in % (40-49 years; 30-39 years; 18-29 years)
  3. Usage by gender in % (female; male)

For the design, I decided in favour of a radial representation. Each coloured circle represents a contraceptive. The light-dark contrast of one half of the circle in turn represents the year.

Colour

Pink = condom

Green = birth control pill

Contrast

Light = 2011

Dark = 2018

Interactive prototype

The interactive prototype offers the opportunity to look at the compared data in detail. It is noticeable that the condom is used more frequently in 2018 than in 2011, especially in the younger age group. Women in particular use the condom more frequently. The birth control pill in 2018, on the other hand, has seen a significant decline in the 18-29 age group compared to 2011. In this context, the number of application problems during usage has increased.

The search for suitable data and subsequent categorization proved challenging at the outset, as often there were either insufficient data available or they couldn't be compared effectively. Therefore, it was necessary to spend more time searching for the appropriate statistics. The analysis and processing of each data set proved fascinating, as it allowed for the extraction of interesting aspects from the contraceptive methods being compared. Overall, it was exciting to devise new ways of presenting data and to express them using different colours and shapes.
