Visualizing audio

With the help of different colors, shapes and effects, the character or effect of an acoustic melody should be represented. To do this, the sequence of a soundtrack is analyzed by breaking it down into its individual components. Each instrument, each pitch, each intensity and even more parameters are first examined. These are then compared with each other in their temporal sequences and used to create a suitable visual mood picture.

The choice of the song "CRONOS" by Two Fingers x Muadeep, is based on its uplifting, impressive and varied character. The melody leaves an abstract and interesting note as unexpected sounds appear in the song. Visually interesting visuals can be derived from this, especially with the slow build-up of tension at the beginning of the song.

In addition, we ran the song through a remix program to focus only on the fascinating elements, as the original was too long for us.

Soundtrack analysis

We were able to extract a total of twelve different tones from the song. We then examined each individual sound using certain methods, such as the "semantic differential" or the "morphological box". This allowed us to assign special properties and a unique character to each sound, which helped us with further analysis and visual implementation.

Later on, we decided on eleven sounds, which we animated in After Effects.

Beginning

Our concept is based on a grid that we associated with the song. The song is divided into a total of three parts, which we wanted to illustrate visually with the grid.

Grid is only indicated 00:00-00:11s

Main part

Grid is completely visible 00:12-00:40s

The sound of the "Spieluhr" in particular seemed a little dragging to us and also long. As if it was soaking something up.

That’s why we created a zoom-in and zoom-out effect combined with a color switch. Every black area became white and every white area became black. With the zoom effect, we were able to give the whole thing a very pulling and soaking-up character. Also with the color switch we were able to give our whole composition more dynamics.

Ending

Grid dissolves 00:41-00:55s

The sound slowly fades out here and everything becomes calmer. Each square randomly detaches itself from the grid by gradually disappearing of the frame.

In order to emphasise the unrest of the "Scary End" tone, we let all the remaining squares fall down in complete chaos to disappear at the edge of the frame.

The project has shown how important it is to develop a consistent and structured concept step by step by carefully working through various design and analysis methods in order to achieve a visually appropriate mood picture.

The difficulty here was to get an overall view of the individual tones, as these overlapped in places. It also took a while to assign each sound its individual character and analyse its properties. Overall, it was an exciting experience to deal explicitly with audio in design and to develop a visual atmosphere with the help of parametrically developed visual descriptions of instruments and sounds.
